Description
As the demands of education and the workplace increasingly emphasize digital learning resources, many students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and students from low-income backgrounds, who are already faceing challenges in core academics risk being further left behind if those digital resources are not created with their needs in mind. The CISL project is building a student-facing learning environment that encourages students to explore varying settings, supports, and scaffolds to understand how they learn best. Our tools store these preferences and adapt them to support ongoing learning. We are also focusing on helping educators create accessible content by developing authoring systems that prompt them to address the needs of all learners. Our tools bring the principles of Universal Design for Learning, known to be promising for these populations, to the creation and use of digital materials.
Participants will hear a brief overview of the project before trying out the tools. Participants will leave this session with a deeper understanding of the importance of ensuring the accessibility of digital learning materials and new knowledge of how to find and create digital materials that meet diverse needs.
